Welcome Home by Douglas Johnson MD
Conceived in 1939 to provide a rugged protected base of operations in Ribault Bay to defend the Southeastern USA from hostile aggressors, Mayport Naval Station became a reality in 1942, hosting numerous aircraft and escort carriers and patrol craft during World War II. By 1944, a runway was also created, and since then has also served as a training base for countless rotary wing crews. Long deployments worldwide became the norm from Mayport and continue to this day, separating crews from family for months. For over 80 years, the rite of celebration for a returning crew from such a deployment has continued to be a source of joy and pride for Navy families. “Welcome Home” depicts one such celebration: Families cheer and cry for joy as they see loved ones return home safe after standing in harm’s way to defend our way of life and our freedoms.
