Artist's Statement
By reason of birth through lineage, my heritage is Dutch and German. Through place of birth in Nigeria, West Africa, my heritage includes the full range of activities, practices, traditions, meanings and behaviors I drew from for 18 years while growing up in Nigeria.
Ethnicity is associated with culture, a social group sharing commonalties. My culture is multi-faceted. A Tiv woman “adopted” my mother as her daughter where they were stationed in Asekunue when I was a child. This adoption by the Tiv people runs through me. Tiv was my first language before English. I would speak it in my dreams (as told by my parents). This was in Benue State before going to boarding school.
I attended school in Plateau State where there was a mixture of different ethnic groups with mainly Hausa being spoken. I went to school with the same 32 classmates from first grade through twelfth in which 15 different nationalities were represented, and a handful of different religions. To this day, I am in touch with all of my classmates and we have reunions in different parts of the world where we are located. I cherish the wonderful exposure to all the various ethnicities and cultures I have been a part of and that has interwoven its thread through me.
My art is storytelling with quite a bit of symbolism. I mainly depict people. I tell the story of my childhood of growing up in Nigeria, of the people groups in Nigeria, and the uniting of cultures and races as was represented in my grade school through high school in Nigeria. I also tell my story of being a missionary kid, the importance of God in my life, the search of identifying my own self which includes so many more facets than the color of my skin; and finding that social group which has to include that wonderful jambalaya of people and acceptance.
