LOCAL COLOR BY ARTIST ABBY HOWARD MURPHY AT THE MAIN LIBRARY DOWNTOWN 303 N Laura St., 3rd Floor Jacksonville, Florida 32202 EXHIBITION DATES: Nov 3rd - Dec 12th, 2025 RECEPTION: Sunday, Dec 3rd, 2 pm - 4 pm ARTIST BIO This award-winning northeast Florida artist developed a love of place and an appreciation for natural wonders with some inspiration from an adventurous travel agent mother, a DIY father, an artist babysitter and a love of impressionist paintings. |
Abby received her B.A. from the School of International Service at The American University with a minor in Environmental Studies, specializing in marine biology and law of the sea; interning for the International Institute for Environment and Development; creating an illustrated guide of Turks and Caicos dune plants; and painting scenery for theater productions.
Primarily self-taught, her perspective and creative side continued to intersect during a diverse professional career addressing hazardous waste at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; consulting for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Everglades restoration; launching the University of North Florida Environmental Center; educating youth and adults on the St. Johns River with SJRWMD; and assisting the North Florida Land Trust preserve special places for generations. When a banking executive, she applied her craft to themed customer and associate events and murals for non-profits as her paintings began winning regional awards.
Now a full-time artist working primarily in oil --- seascapes, skyscapes and forests are inspired by her world travels and northeast Florida home and are often framed in rescued vintage frames destined for the landfill. From vibrant vistas to iconic landmarks in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, her paintings inspire a sense of place.
Painting en plein air allows the artist to capture vibrant colors and the play of light celebrating those intricacies of nature the camera fails to see. The artist hopes that her images resonate with the viewer and may trigger a fond memory; inspire them to champion environmental stewardship or nudge them to venture out and explore those wild spaces and living things that define their own hometown anew.
Ms. Murphy s a member of Oil Painters of America, the Florida Artists Group, First Coast Plein Air Painters, the St. Augustine Art Association, the Jacksonville Artists Guild, and Jax Urban Sketchers.
