Ostrich Farm Jacksonville 1910 by Peggy Harrell Jennings
From the late 1800s until the early 1900s the Florida Ostrich Farm on Tallyrand Avenue offered races on Ostrich back as well as rides in wagons with harnessed ostriches. Locals and tourists frequented the farm and I find it fascinating to think of people participating in those activities since ostrichs are notoriously ill-tempered and dangerous although perhaps not as frightening as children riding on alligators another popular past time. The Ostrich Farm painting is based on a compilation of references to several antique postcards from the era. The ghostlike figures in blue are a nod to what Ferlenghetti called " pictures of a gone world."
This piece is part of the “Jacksonville Past and Present” Bicentennial Exhibition.
