Reflections by Douglas Johnson MD
Once a winter retreat for a wealthy industrialist and his wife, the estate called Washington Oaks was bequeathed to Florida in 1965. The Washington Oaks State Park still boasts the manicured formal gardens and pathways built by the Youngs in their heyday, including this serene pool and gazebo, tucked amid a secluded copse of trees and lush greenery. The quiet is only broken by the subdued tinkle of a fountain and occasional birdsong. Reflections abound on the pool’s mirrored surface.
This piece is part of the “Our Florida” Jacksonville Main Library Exhibition.
