Gears by Artist Ed Malesky. I really like the Steampunk aesthetic. The use of gears and clockworks are what inspired this piece. The turning process is greatly complicated by creating a see-through band of cast epoxy containing the gears, which requires a whole different turning strategy than a regular bowl. The wood is special too. It's soft maple with some nice fiddleback figure. As the name implies this is the same kind of figure sought for violin backs and is usually caused by environmental stress on the maple tree as it is growing.
