Josephine
Josephine by Artist Lisa Lofton. This mixed media piece depicts the proud and courageous Josephine Baker. This woman overcame so much in her lifetime. She has so many wonderful quotes to pull from. The quote illustrated in this portrait really speaks to the inequality people of color had to endure and are still enduring in many different ways.
Josephine Baker was born in the United States. She became a dancer and only attained stardom by leaving the US for France due to prejudice. She became a celebrated star in France and Europe. She worked to pass secrets during World War II on sheet music to help defeat the Nazi regime. When she returned to the United States her achievements made no difference to those who continued to institute segregation based on a person's skin color. This made her angry so she worked to as a civil rights activist to help institute change.
Her soulful eyes, life of achievement in the face of adversity and wonderful voice drew me to her. I hope this quote makes us all think about how far we still need to go to make our country free and equal for all and find a path to unity.
