I can’t count the number of times manatees have suddenly appeared in front of me while exploring Florida’s natural aquatic environments—whether along the coast, in cold springs, or the St. John’s River. I’m particularly in love with these giant, gentle aquatic mammals. Reflecting on the photos I took years ago at the manatee rescue and rehabilitation facility in Orlando, my desire to paint them has grown even stronger.
Due to global warming, habitat loss, and the decimation of their primary food sources, many manatees today are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Through my art, I hope to raise awareness and inspire the public to take action.
