Mother and Child
Mother and Child by Artist Marsha Hatcher
is an acrylic painting on hardboard showcasing two figures predominantly rendered in deep blue tones. The piece presents an intimate close-up of a young child whose large, expressive eyes gaze outward, capturing a soulful and emotive expression. Above and behind the child, a woman, depicted as a nurturing figure, gently embraces the child. Her face is shaded in deep blue with serene, closed eyes, suggesting tenderness and protection.
The background features a gradient of warm colors, transitioning from green to yellow to orange, providing a striking contrast against the blue figures and adding depth and warmth to the composition. Unique to this piece is the layering technique used; the image of the mother and child was painted over an existing painting of a dancing woman, remnants of which are subtly visible in the background colors. This layering imparts a sense of history and depth to the artwork, enriching its narrative of maternal bond and care.
This is part of Marsha's featured artist exhibit at the TAC Gallery 320 E Adams Street.
The exhibit runs from September 24th to November 23rd. This piece can be viewed online or at the gallery; we ask that it stay at the gallery until the reception on October 13th from 2 to 4 p.m.
