Artist Delia Yan

Immanence Art Exhibition
Dec 4th 2021 - Dec 18th, 2021
Reception Dec 4th 2021, 1pm - 4pm

Delia Yan was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. She is currently attending the University of North Florida for her BFA in Ceramics. She primarily uses stoneware clay as her medium. Yan's coil-built work explores how elements such as color, form, and texture affect the viewer’s perception of the piece. Her inspiration stems from the study of aesthetics, and she hopes to find more ways to manifest emotions through her work. Her work has been exhibited at the UNF Gallery of Art, the Lufrano Intercultural Gallery, and MOCA

Artists Statement

Through the use of organic forms, color, and visual weight, I create works that are alluring and sensuous. I use ceramics as my medium to capture the dual roles of utility and decoration. At times, my pieces lean more towards function, and at other times, they are solely sculptural. I feel there is a distinct type of appreciation for a piece where both these qualities coexist, rather than having a sole purpose. I am inspired by the relationship between the mind and reality. I am intrigued by the varying perspectives people have when interpreting a piece. I use nonobjectivity as the focus for my forms to bring about a consciousness within the viewer and use elements such as color, form, and texture to see the effect they have on the senses. I am inspired by non-objective art. The abstract shapes found in nature inspire my sketches. Each form I create starts with a sketch. The sketch continues to evolve as I add or take away parts. After I get the base form down, I brainstorm the types of textures the piece could have. I decide the firing method after I’m content with the final sketch. I handbuild my pieces in order to further connect with the medium and understand the technical aspects as I build. I value the constraints of working in one medium as it allows me to explore and understand the material to its fullest. I feel that the firing method is a vital part of the process as it adds a visual element to the form. I am drawn to atmospheric firings such as salt, soda, and wood because it further enhances the natural look of my sculptural pieces. You can never be too certain of the outcome of the atmospheric firings, which is a benefit to the organic nature of my work. Although I don’t tend to use glazes, certain glazes can help enhance the look of the textured pieces. It’s important that whichever firing process I choose doesn’t take away from the form and instead elevates the forms I create
