Juror: Keri Foster  is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. She teaches piano at her music school in Riverside called Bold City Music Co, as well as being a poet and host of spoken word events in Jacksonville since 2013 at venues like Bab's Lab, CoRK, Yellow House, Coniferous Cafe, and currently Silver Cow. Keri's first poetry chapbook ‘Mind The Path’ was released through Happy Tapir Press in 2018 and can be found in Quimby's Bookstore in Chicago and New York City. She has also been a figure model since 2012 for The Art Center, The Ponte Vedra Cultural Center, and FSCJ’s figure drawing programs, working closely with artists such as Annelies Dykgraaf, Pablo Rivera, Kevin Arthur, and Jeff Whipple.

First Place: Lisa Lofton “String Art”
Forgive me but I have a lot to say about this piece and why I selected it as the show winner. When looking through all of the submissions for Tune In, “String” drew me back again and again. The theme for the show reverberated in my mind, thinking not only of music and auditory sense but also our modern cultural climate and current events. I thought immediately of Elijah McClain, the young Black man that was a victim of police brutality earlier this year, and the image of him playing violin for homeless cats at a shelter. I thought of a panel I sat in on at the downtown library last year with Shawana Brooks and Courtney Bryan, the recent Composer-in-residence for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and how an audience member challenged the Symphony’s representative for answers as to why there is a single Black musician in our symphonic orchestra when Jacksonville has a population that is 30% Black. “String” stirred my mind and put me in the room where the depicted violinist was the focus, was the worthy soloist, was the revered musician bringing an audience to awed silence. The work itself is purely beautiful, mournful perhaps, with the sheet music faintly discernible through the figure’s skin, an integral part of the musician’s physical form. I can practically hear his song. He has my full attention.

Second Place:  Laurence Walden “Ode to Jimi Hendrix”
This piece drew me in, had me getting on the floor to take in all of the details, from the halo-like crown to the butter-knife jowls, to the beat up guitar, wondering what song would emanate if I closed my eyes hard and listened close enough. I also accepted my four year old’s input, as we took this piece in and stared in wonder together. This piece was his favorite - though I promise I used all of my academic artistic intuition to select this piece for second place.

Third Place: Pat Mahoney “Jazz”
“Jazz” struck me a few different ways – the technical proficiency in the skin tone and the representation of the subject’s dreadlocks foremost, and then the subject matter next. The subject reminded me of my classmates when I studied jazz history at Douglas Anderson. He feels familiar, as if we were about to slip into a conversation about Robert Glasper or maybe Thelonious Monk. Of course as a musically inclined person I was pleased to see the music notation depicted accurately as it dances around the subject’s head, as if the young man’s musical thoughts were made physical. I can feel his head nodding in time to a silent beat. Finally I appreciated the choice of framing as it made me think of old concert halls in Chicago or NYC.

Honors: Erin Hurlbert “Euterpe”
This piece had me moving in circles around the pedestal on which it resides, had me moving in time with the musician and the swirling music, held in rapture like the face suspended inside the moment of ecstatic vibration.
