Artist Emily Lagrule

Inside My Dreams and Nightmares Art Exhibition
Dec 5th 2022 - Dec 12th, 2022
Reception Dec 5th, 2022, 6pm - 8pm

Emily Lagrule is a multi-media artist, though her primary medium is sculpture. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Florida. Lagrule incorporates conceptual, experimental, representational, and organic themes in her work. Symbolism is also central to her work; she often includes the pawn chess piece to represent individuals or groups. Lagrule draws the concept of connections and relationships by using the pawn as an object through the viewer themselves, causing the viewer to relate to the artwork personally. She achieves this by focusing on having the viewer relate to the artwork personally. This way, the viewer can use their experiences to interpret and derive meaning from the artwork. Lagrule's recent body of work actualizes her dreams and nightmares within the last two years when the COVID-19 pandemic was taking place. During the pandemic, she had to bring the stressors of work and school life home—allowing issues in her life to surface through her dreams. She wants to share these issues and insecurities with her viewers to evoke emotion and start a conversation about life's struggles relative to the body of work presented. She uses various materials and processes in her work, such as metal and resin casting, steel fabrication, wood, and other mixed media

Artists Statement

Inside My Dreams and Nightmares Inside My Dreams and Nightmares is a colorful and representational body of work that explores dreams and nightmares while also incorporating dreams I have had within the last two years (2020-2022) during the COVID- 19 pandemic. During the pandemic, I was bringing the stressors of work and school life home—allowing issues in my life to surface through dreams. I want to share these issues and insecurities with my viewers to evoke emotion and start a conversation about life's struggles relative to the body of work presented. There is a reoccurrence of the pawn chess piece throughout the series. It is an invitation for the viewer to see themselves as the pawn, thereby placing themselves within the dream or nightmare being depicted. I see art as an opportunity to connect with others in our shared experiences. With this body of work, I offer viewers the opportunity to feel a sense of emotion and connection with me while looking inward and finding meaning relevant to their own lived experiences during the turbulent and isolating pandemic period.

The artworks presented are sculptural and two-dimensional works on a large and small scale. The process for each piece is different. Casting knowledge in metal and resin starts with hand carving/ sculpting, followed by mold making and entirely casting the material. Other processes include bookbinding techniques and leather carving tools, digital design and sculptural installation techniques using CAD and three-dimensional printing to render an object, and metal and wood fabrication
