JUROR: Gordon Meggison https://www.gordonmeggison.com/
Gordon Meggison was born in Tampa, Florida, in 1954. He lived in Japan and attended St. Joseph's Academy from 1963-to 1968. This was followed by three years in Maine, where he graduated from Sumner High School. Gordon returned to Florida in 1971, where he studied art at Jacksonville University. He has traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States and attributes his wide range of artistic interests to these many international influences. Gordon has had multiple solo exhibitions in the United States and Nantes, France, in 1992 (French Light-Florida Light), which featured his Plein air watercolors painted throughout Florida and France. A corresponding show was held at the San Marco Little Theatre, where he had also painted the murals decorating the interior. |
General Mills hired Gordon to paint 70 murals in many Olive Garden Restaurants located in major cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and others all over the United States. A large mural of his work is installed in the Indiana Dunes State Park, featuring detailed renderings of 60 animals and their habitats in that park ecosystem. Gordon has painted murals for homes all over the United States, including New York, Colorado, Texas, and Puerto Rico. His fine artwork and canvas murals have been placed in the Philippines, Japan, the Cayman Islands, Canada, and Panama.
1st PlaceZende Tendaji Randolph for “Imagin-O-Graphic”
A clever and well-executed sophisticated rendering of the camping theme. It seems to question, “What is Camping really all about anyway!?” The line work is mature and well thought through, and the rendering is imaginative and clever - tongue in cheek. This artist may well have a future in comic illustration or even political cartooning.

2nd PlaceVeronika Garcia for “Let’s Go Camping”
This sensitive and loose pencil drawing was evocative, moody, and even playful. Camping seems both scary and funny simultaneously, giving it a quality that is innocuous at first; then makes you take a second look. “What are the family of kids and parents talking about here? Are they confident, apprehensive?" The line quality and the anime referenced figures give it a comic character and a hint that much more interesting and possibly sophisticated work may yet be seen by this humble and sensitive soul. |
3rd PlaceAnastasi Kozeev for “Campfire Songs”
While I didn’t see any campfire in this piece, and I should have given the theme of the painting and show, I see a lot of possibilities in this earnest artist, who has a dedication to her craft that is evident in the perspective, the self-examined soul-searching viewpoint that comes through here. She clearly understands some of the fundamentals of perspective and of classical painting concepts, while giving a mature insightful nod to surrealism as seen from a young self-aware teen. I see a lot of potential here as long as the image can match the intention of any future themes. |
Honorable MentionLara Goodrich for “Last Summer’s Rodeo”
I enjoyed the deep dive into both the Art Foil medium, the bull’s eyes, and the shape of the head and movement of hair on the character. You can see a Van Gogh like treatment of the movement in the hair, not just chaotic handling, but a sense of thoughtfulness and hidden order to things that lent the subject dignity and depth. In all this, it seems the artist must be an intelligent and intense, visual person who really looks at what she sees. |

“In the summer I chill with my axolotl on the patio,” James says with a grin from ear to ear. Eleven-year-old James loves the endangered alien-like creature.
