Orange you Glad you Live in Florida - Framed print
My family would travel from Kentucky to Florida to see my grandparents as a child. We would get so excited when our old station wagon would cross the border from Georgia to Florida, and we could stop at the Welcome Station! While my father charted our way to the East Coast of Florida, on interstate 10 to Jacksonville, we would get our complimentary cup of orange juice. I had collected my souvenir “Orange Bird” cup, and it was always at my side during our journeys south. This painting depicts the treasured memories of not a Florida native but a transplant who has lived in the state for over 48 years. This is my home, and I hope visiting children still experience the thrill of crossing that state line and being welcomed with a cup of orange nectar. Welcome to Florida!
A Little History about my Orange Bird Cup:
The Orange Bird was created in 1970 as a mascot for the Florida Citrus Commission in exchange for them sponsoring the Tiki Room attraction at the Magic Kingdom. The bird appeared in ads for Florida oranges. After his initial campaign was dropped in the 1970s, the Orange Bird appeared in a few educational shorts in the 1980s, such as “Foods and Fun, A Nutrition Adventure,” and “The Orange Bird and the Nutrition Bandwagon.” Eventually, the bird would fade into obscurity when Disney and the FCC severed their ties in 1987.
