The rigid variegated prickly striped leaves weaving in and out of a tangle below this striking red pineapple was eyed at a botanical garden visit. I’d never seen such a specimen, though we grow pineapples here. I was taken by the diamond shapes for each of the tiny thorns created by the swirled pattern of the fruit as it grew and its magnificent spiky crown.
