Jacksonville has had a long proud tradition of training Naval and Guard aviators to defend our shores, customs, and values here and abroad. From flying boats plying the St. Johns River in the early days of the 20th century to the creation of the Navy Demonstration Team (aka, the Blue Angels) in the 1940’s, to countless aviators passing through our three Naval Air Stations and our Army and Air National Guard bases to this day, and even to our latest hosting of high-flying drones traveling the world from here –Jacksonville and military aviation are forever linked. This painting depicts U.S. Navy FA-18 Hornet out of Cecil Field Naval Air Station climbing above the realm of passenger airliners to participate in joint exercises with two Florida Air National Guard (FANG) F-15 Eagles launched from our Guard base at Jacksonville International Airport.
This piece is part of the “Jacksonville Past and Present” Bicentennial Exhibition.
